This has to be the number one question all personal trainers get, even if they are not in the weight loss niche. Even the body-building meat heads all want to know how they can become leaner and lose fat. I think think we can agree that the majority of people think a lean toned body is a more attractive body. This is one of the main reasons why the fitness industry is worth billions now.
So What Is the Best Way to Burn Fat?
First I will tell you what isn't the best way to burn fat. And this is what the majority of you reading will be doing. Most people looking to lose weight usually (in my experience) go straight for the treadmill and start there path to weight loss staring at the calories burned counter. They go for the slow, steady, boring cardio method, which quite frankly is a waste of time. Will it help you lose fat, Yes, but there are far more efficient ways of doing so.
By doing slow and steady cardio you are basically training like a marathon runner (an endurance athlete) which will get you fitter, but the problem is no body wants to look like a marathon runner. So your after picture would be Paula Radcliff's body with your face on it, bet if I asked a thousand women what they want there bodies to look like I would be very confident that no one would say Paula Radcliff. Sorry Paula.
What happens is when you do this slow and steady cardio, you actually end up burning a lot of muscle before you burn the fat. This is because your fat is a "just in case" energy store, and your body will only burn it when it absolutely has to. Muscle in the eyes of your body is more disposable so that goes first then the fat. That's why all runners have very skinny bodies and not a lot of muscle mass.
So if your not trying to look like a runner, stop training like one!
A much better approach would to start a weight training programme. Which has numerous benefits but the biggest one being, for fat loss it gets results a lot faster that just doing cardio.
I'm going to outline for you the best way (in my opinion) to lose fat fast. You will need to do 3 weight training sessions a week. These should last no longer than an hour, if they do you are not working hard enough.
The weight training sessions should focus on working the entire body, and focus on using compound moves that use multiple muscles and joints. These moves generally are harder to perform and therefore will burn more calories than just doing isolation exercises, where you just work one muscle at a time. This way of training means you will get a lot more done in less time.
Another way of training to maximise results is to use a method of training called supersets. This is when you perform two exercises back to back without rest in-between. For example, you may perform squats (10 reps) followed directly by press ups (12 reps) after performing the superset then you may have a little rest. So in the time it would have taken you to do 3 sets of one exercise you can do 3 sets of 2 exercises, which will raise the intensity of your workouts therefore getting results faster.
Try doing this instead of your normal cardio sessions and I guarantee that you will get much better results.
