A balanced diet and regular exercise will keep the metabolic rate steady and healthy. The metabolic rate is based on factors like age, quantity of food eaten, physical activity, lean body structure and genetics, which is why some people look relatively lean despite consuming more food as opposed to some people with heavy bodies.

Strength building exercises, like weight lifting, will build your muscles and increase your BMR because muscle cells burn calories a lot more than fat cells. Severe dieting has never helped anyone lose weight unless it is combined with exercise as well. Quick weight loss programs that involve starving yourself will only make your muscle mass disappear and leave your fat untouched. Lack of muscle mass will lower your BMR. If you resume eating as before, without any physical exercise, you will gain weight but without any muscle mass. Besides, starving will reduce the water content in the body and bring down the BMR even further.
Increase physical activity
The body needs energy to do anything as simple as merely clicking the computer mouse or something as strenuous as weight lifting. An increase in energy leads to an increase in the body metabolic rate. Therefore, you need to think of ways to produce energy in your body and exercise regularly. One way would be to swap labor saving devices and do the work yourself. Avoid using the car to places that are near enough to walk or use the stairs instead of the lifts.
