The African Mango is a specific type of Mango grown principally in the Republic of Cameroon in Western Africa. The ground seed of this mango has been used by the indigenous population as appetite suppressant, in much the same way as the Hoodia Gordonii cactus has been used by the bush men of the Kalahari further south. Their use of the plant is for basic survival. They found a way to suppress their appetite because of a lack of available food. But the west has utilised this seed extract for one of its biggest markets - weight loss.
The way in which this seed, also called the Dikka Nut, works is to alter the action of certain hormones in the body. Hormones are one of the body's communication systems. They tell you when your body needs food as well as when you've had enough to eat. They do of course do a lot of other jobs as well, such as preparing the body for flight during times of danger. However in relation to the Dikka Nut we are looking at how it affects the signal to the brain regarding satiation. The claim is that this substance improves the effectiveness of the hormone Leptin which signals a part of the brain to let it know when a person has had enough to eat.
The Cameroon natives utilise freshly ground Dikka Nuts for this purpose. However when this product goes into full scale production it is ground into a powder, dried and encapsulated. It can also sit on a pharmacy or stockroom shelf for months. We know that the fresh product can be effective but processing of the product can very much alter just how effective it can be. It is very much along the same as orange juice. Freshly squeezed orange juice should be consumed within a few minutes to gain the maximum benefit of the enzymes contained therein. The Dikka Nut may well be similar.
Having said that, there are a large number of people that swear by African Mango supplements but it is important to purchase from a high quality supplement manufacturer who can deliver the ground extract with maximum potency. Only purchase from established manufacturers preferably those offering a money back guarantee. Don't go with the cheapest supplier only as you may well be disappointed. Also you may want to consider other natural appetite suppressants such as Hoodia Gordonii or Caralluma Fimbriata, both cactus based products.
